Within a broad field of cirrocumulus stratiformis, a cavum creates a spectacular opening bordered by a plume of ice crystals. This rare phenomenon forms when supercooled water droplets are disturbed, triggering rapid crystallization that opens a genuine window to the blue sky within the cloud layer.
